The Academy Awards

Scott Harrison said that it has been a successful season for the Academy, despite all the breaks in play due to the lock down. It was a difficult decision to choose the award winners as there were many players that have contributed to a great season; any one of the squad that were regulars in the FA Youth Cup played a major part.
The main highlights from this season were:.

  • The FA Youth Cup run saw us reach the 3RD Round for the first time in 25 Years – eventually losing at Brighton and Hove Albion.
  • In the 1st Round proper of that run we were away at Leyton Orient and came from 2 goals down to win the game 3-2; a performance to be really proud of
  • We were sitting 2nd in the National South U19s League until it was curtailed
  • A number of Academy Players gained 1st team opportunities and there were National League Debuts from Jack Skinner, Leo Hamblin, Sam Evans, Selim Saied & Jayden Wareham, who also scored 2 National League Goals at the age of 17.
  • Leo Hamblin played full 90-minute performances at the back end of the National League season
  • Jayden Wareham deservedly joined Chelsea after all the work put into him by the Academy staff over the last 2 years

The winners from the Academy were:

  • 1st Year Academy Player Of The Year – Jack Bingham
  • 2nd Year Academy Player Of The Year – Jake Rumble
  • Academy Player of the Year – Trevor Caborn

Away Travel

Away Travel 2021-22

The Trust has already booked coaches for the first two away matches of the new season, starting with Wealdstone. Over the closed season, we have integrated an event booking system into the website, so we will shortly be opening that up to allow online booking and payment. That will reduce the amount of cash handling and assure you that a place is reserved. We’ll have more news shortly on this.

Trust Meets with John Katz

The Cards Trust board met informally with John Katz, Rosemary Johnson, Alan Dowson, Martin Tyler and Mick Livesey to discuss cooperation between the Trust and the Club. John Katz was also briefed on the status and activities of the Trust, although he was already aware of the important contribution, in finance and in other ways, by Trust members.

No formal decisions were made, but there was discussion of the changes that John Katz is making at the stadium which are intended to make the ground a more attractive place to visit on match days and at other times. He has a lot of experience in the US with catering and entertainment in the US and has a lot of ideas (although he knows that not every idea that works there will work in the UK!). He also explained that he will be moving to the area in August so that he can devote more time to his work at the club.

Among topics discussed were discounts for Trust members at the Club shop, which will be having a sale. The Club is developing a new online shop service that should mean faster service for online purchases. Unfortunately, the business arrangement for the website mean that the Club doesn’t feel able to offer discounts for online purchases. The Club is also looking to update its website inline with its new identity and the new badge.

All aspects of the matchday experience are being reviewed and the Trust has put forward its facilities for polling fans via its website.

The Trust has agreed the use of Club facilities for some social events, when things get unlocked. The Club is also providing some welcome gifts for Young Cards fans.

The welcome boards at the ground will be updated and the Trust is also updating the ‘Time Line’ outside the bar as it stopped nearly 10 years ago.

On the evening following, John Katz also met fans at an informal late-notice event and outlined a lot of his ideas. Alan Dowson also confirmed that he has around half his squad finalised for next season, with a plan to have around 18 players in the squad.

Player of the Month

Player of the Season 2020-21

The clear winner of the Fans’ Player of the Season award was Craig Ross – the winner of many of the monthly competitions this year. Craig has signed a new two year contract with the Cards so we can continue to enjoy his performances.

16 players received votes and in second place was Kyran Lofthouse and just behind in third was Charlie Cooper. A big thank you to all the squad for seeing us through a challenging season.

The trophy was presented by Rupert Philips after the Wealdstone game along with another bottle of champagne, kindly donated by Waitrose, Watchmoor Park. Thanks to them, too.

We’re Spraying Help Around

The Club is planning to work on further improving the playing surface for next season. As well as new mowing equipment there is a plan to acquire a new motorised sprayer. The Trust is making a donation of £5,500 to the Club to pay for the sprayer, with most of the money coming from the 400 Club. Thanks to all that have donated and taken part.
